MONTAGUE — After Tuesday’s game at North Muskegon was bumped by the winter storm that swept through the area early in the week, the Montague Wildcats were left with no games for a week leading into a rematch of their close loss to Shelby in December.

Predictably, considering Shelby had lost to Mason County Central on Tuesday and were looking to cut their losses in the conference chase, the Tigers got off to a hot start while Montague looked somewhat sluggish. But the Wildcats bounced back in the third quarter and did enough late to lock up a key West Michigan Conference win Friday night, 62-61, in a game that had a little bit of everything.

“We were a little rusty,” Montague coach David Osborne said. “Shelby shot the ball well in the first half. They weren’t uncontested shots, either.”

The Wildcats (10-1, 7-1 WMC) trailed by seven at the break but exploded for a 14-0 run to start the third quarter, shutting Shelby out for nearly six minutes of the frame before a Jason Beckman three-pointer ended the run.
