March is National Reading Month |

March is National Reading Month. I guess it’s as good a time as any to get on my soapbox (again) about the importance of reading. (I’ve been an obsessive book lover my entire life.) And by reading, I guess I am including e-books. I love real books, but reading is reading and initial studies show that digital products may be helping to increase reading rates.
Sharon Smith, head librarian at the Montague City Public Library and a fellow book lover, says e-books are popular. “In the libraries we have seen an increase in e-book use,” she says. “We subscribe to Overdrive [a digital distributor of e-books, audio books, and other digital content for libraries, schools, retailers, and publishers] to help people download books for free from the library.”
So, where to start with in answering, “Why read?” How about with the benefits of reading? According to Sharon, “Reading improves imagination, writing skills, and vocabulary. It strengthens your thought process and can reduce stress.” And there’s more. Lot’s more. Just about everything you do in your daily life involves reading. The more you read, or the more practice you get, the more you get better at reading. There are even some studies that show that those who have good reading skills have higher paying jobs.
