The Winners’ Circle is MASA’s way of recognizing members whose leadership has launched or adapted an effective program or practice, that achieves results, and that could be replicated in other districts. The administrators were honored at an Awards and Recognition Luncheon during MASA’s Midwinter Conference in Kalamazoo.

Robrahn and the other recipients are being recognized for the Cookin’ Club. The Cookin’ Club has met in Montague to help 6th graders know more about working in the kitchen, healthy meals and meal planning. After six after-school classes, the eight students will prepare a full meal for their parents. Part of the program came from our local “One in 21” initiative from the Muskegon County health department.

The district hopes to help students learn the basics that will then transfer to their home environment. Skills include measuring, kitchen safety (knives, burners, etc.) and economics of meal planning. Students selected are at-risk and also have the opportunity to meet new peers and positive mentors from the community.

Results so far are promising:

• Students are able to understand household budgeting and what costs are associated with meal prep.

• We have been able to produce a 6 week curriculum culminating in a family meal that is able to be used by other districts.

• Students are able to meet positive mentors from the community and the school.

• Students have a better understanding of nutrition.

MASA is a statewide association which represents the superintendents and first-line administrators of Michigan’s local and intermediate school districts. The mission of MASA is to develop leadership and unity within its membership to achieve the continuous improvement of public education in Michigan.
