February lecture series to feature Lazaro Vega

The second in a series of three lectures will be presented on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Nuveen Center. This month will feature Lazaro Vega, jazz director at Blue Lake Public Radio and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, who will speak on “What’s that you say? Jazz is a verb AND a noun!”

Over the course of about 30 years, Vega has put Blue Lake Public Radio and West Michigan on the national jazz map as he broadcasts 30 hours of jazz programming per week from the Blue Lake studios. It’s probably not going too far to say that Vega’s knowledge of jazz history, recordings and literature is encyclopedic.

“Lazaro is a jazz scholar,” said Dave Myers, Blue Lake Public Radio’s General Manager. “He never tires of learning more about the art form. And he is a wonderful resource for our listeners and for jazz musicians in West Michigan and beyond.”

Currently involved in writing his first book, a collaboration with Korean musician Jin Hi Kim, Vega also volunteers as board member/music committee co-chairman at The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Tickets are $5 for this limited-seating event. Complimentary beverages are included. Tickets are available at the Arts Council of White Lake office, 8695 Ferry St. and the Book Nook and Java Shop, 8726 Ferry St. This is sponsored by the Music & Performing Arts branch of the Arts Council of White Lake.
