Vikes roll to title at West Mich. Duals
 
WHITEHALL — The Whitehall Vikings, currently ranked third in Division 3 by MichiganGrappler.com, made a statement last Saturday at the West Michigan Duals.

Coming off a dominant showing at the GMAA meet Jan. 19, Whitehall swept five matches against tough competition to earn the title at the Duals, capping the day by defeating Division 4’s #2 team, Hesperia, 45-23 in the finals.

The Vikings also recorded easy wins over Allegan, ranked fourth in Division 2, and Division 3 #7 Birch Run at the meet. Whitehall defeated Allegan 39-22 and Birch Run 42-19.

Whitehall’s first two matches were comparatively easier, as the Vikes romped by Holland 72-9 and blasted Comstock Park 66-7.

Six Viking wrestlers recorded perfect records last Saturday. Logan Irey at 112 pounds, Zach Cooper at 130, Steven Sika at 160, Joe Sika at 171, Hunter Shaw at 215 and Logan Morningstar at heavyweight notched five wins.

R-P 3-2, Montague 2-3 at Jacobs Duals

MONTAGUE — Reeths-Puffer posted a strong showing last Saturday at the Randy Jacobs Memorial Duals at Montague, going 3-2 and placing fourth after a tough 39-36 loss to Lake Fenton in the third-place match.

Among the Rockets’ three wins was a victory over Montague.

Reeths-Puffer had seven wrestlers post 4-1 records or better at the event, led by perfect records from C.J. Colbert at 103 pounds, Hunter Schaub at 112, Paul Douglas at 135 and Tyler Stenberg at 140. Going 4-1 were Andrew Emmons at 119, J.J. Covington at 125 and Buck Tottingham at 215.

The Montague Wildcats went 2-3 at the duals, falling to Wyoming 47-28 in the fifth-place match. Montague also lost to North Branch, which ultimately finished second at the duals to Hamilton.

Alex Van Vleet led the Wildcats with a perfect 5-0 record at 145. Four Wildcats went 4-1, including Gabe Flood at 130, Sawyer Smith at 160, Brandon Hammell at 171 and Collin Pineda at heavyweight.

Rockets sweep Mona Shores Tri

MUSKEGON — Reeths-Puffer swept two opponents at the Mona Shores Tri Wednesday night, routing the host Sailors 54-24 and edging Holton 39-31.

Five Rockets went 2-0 individually at the meet. Tyler Stenberg continued his strong season with a sweep at 140 pounds. Jon Woodring at 145, Sean McWilliams at 160, Julian Munday at 189 and Buck Tottingham at 215.

The Rockets competed in the O-K Black Conference finals Saturday after the Beacon went to press.
