LANSING – State Rep. Collene LaMonte (Dem.-Montague) was among twenty-eight new lawmakers who experienced their first day on the next two-year session of the Michigan Legislature.

“I was taking it all in and enjoying the moment,” LaMonte, who represents the 91st District, commented on her first day in the House by telephone. “I had my family with me.”

LaMonte said there was some ceremonial activities, including being sworn-in to the 110-member chamber. Senators are in the middle of their four-year terms.

The Montague Democrat said the House did re-elect Republican Jace Bolger of Marshall as Speaker of the House for his second term despite animosity over the recent lame duck session and his role in the political party switch by a colleague in the House.

LaMonte said the first day also included a seat lottery to determine the seating locations for representatives.

The freshman representative, a former Muskegon Schools teacher, is ready to get to work.

“I am hoping to get working on educational economic issues.”

LaMonte said she anticipates spending a lot of time in the 91st District meeting with organizations and constituents. She anticipates being in Lansing Tuesday through Thursday on a weekly basis for House sessions and committee meetings.

The lawmaker said committee assignments have not been made.

LaMonte said union protesters demonstated outside the Capitol Wednesday as a result of the Right to Work law passed in the lame duck session.
