Boerema family farmhouse.
The White Lake Historical Society recently awarded plaques to owners of two significant area structures.
The plaques were awarded to Ed and Shar Boerema owners of a well-preserved red brick farmhouse located at 5824 Eilers Rd., Montague, and to the Wabaningo Station Post Office for its 1880s vintage building on Murray Rd., Sylvan Beach, Whitehall.
The Boerema’s home, with its barn and outbuildings, was restored by Ben and Pat Scholl in the 1980s. Located in a grove of old sugar maples, the property captures the best of rural farmhouse living.
The Wabaningo Station Post Office is an example of a simple square, wood sided building with a pyramidal roof. It was built to serve as a dance pavilion, but was located up the hill from its current location. It frequently moved, going to the Arcade Steamship/Ferryboat Dock for use as a baggage/waiting room, then off the dock to become Carmie Guerin’s Valhalla Gift Shop.
When threatened by high water, the building was moved across Murray Road. When that site was needed for the Wabaningo Club building, it was moved back to its present shoreline location on White Lake.
Supported financially by the Sylvan Beach Resort Company, the post office building is an activity center for local summer residents as well as a postal station.
