A little bit of the past

Mike Cook of Mike’s Family Pharmacy relaxes, surrounded by the bit of nostalgia from the Todd Pharmacy past.

The Smithsonian Museum is often called the “Nation’s Attic.” The concept, slightly changed, might be extended to the Montague legacy of Todd Pharmacy as “Grace Todd’s Basement.”

Mike Cook, owner of Mike’s Family Pharmacy, located in the entry of Montague Foods, wanted, as he says, “to keep the community’s memory of the Todd Pharmacy alive. A good way to do this is with a little bit of nostalgia. All the items here are from Grace Todd’s basement.”

Those items from the past are located to the right of Mike’s Pharmacy window as customers enter. On the wall there is a picture of the first Todd Pharmacy fountain employees (September 1959) standing behind the curved section of the counter. Below that the display begins the re-creation of the actual 1959 counter curved section, complete with a replica of the fountain menu.

Those smiling faces in the 1959 picture are (L-R) Helen Schmiedeknecht, Mary Cullen, Jeanette Kowalski, Carol (Ford) Lohman, Sandy Nichols, and Trudy (Johnson) Thinnes.

You no longer have the smiling employees behind the original counter, but you can actually sit on the original rotating stools.

The amazing thing in this little nook, with all of the re-creating, is each item, in spite of its age, looks new. The Todds took good care of everything. Mike notes that “the stools have been re-upholstered but the bases do show some signs of wear.”
