Vikings named Academic All-State

WHITEHALL — Whitehall’s baseball team hasn’t played a game since June, but accolades for the team continue to roll in. The latest recognition the Vikings achieved came not on the baseball field, but in the classroom.

The Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association recently announced that Whitehall’s 2012 team has been named Academic All-State. The Vikings recorded the second-highest non-weighted Grade Point Average in the state in Division 2.

“This award speaks volumes to the quality kids we have in the baseball program,” Whitehall baseball coach Warren Zweigle said. “While coaches certainly stress citizenship and academics to our players, this award belongs to the kids. They are 100 percent responsible for the grades they produced in the classroom.”

The team’s GPA was 3.56 on a 4.0 scale. Individually, Daniel Westrate and Ray Copley posted perfect 4.0 GPAs and received first-team all-state academic recognition as well.

The Vikings excelled on the field as well as the classroom in 2012, winning their second consecutive district title and posting a 22-11 overall record.

“Coaching is easy when you have quality student-athletes in your program,” Zweigle said.
