Only a shell of a two-story Grant Township home remains after a blaze which claimed the life of eighty-three year old Daniel S. Grubb, Sr. on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The victim of a fatal fire in rural Oceana County last Thursday has been identified.

Eighty-three year old Daniel S. Grubb, Sr. died in the house fire reported at 11:50 a.m., according to information supplied by the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Tim Priese said Mr. Grubb’s remains have been positively identified.

According to the report, Mr. Grubb and his wife, Rosemary, were at home in their two-story home at 4770 W. Park Rd., in northwest Grant Township when the fire started. The home is located on a hill overlooking the dirt section of Park Rd., just west of the US-31 overpass.

The report indicated Mr. Grubb had gone upstairs to fill a cigar lighter. He then advised his wife the home was on fire and she needed to get out. She fled the home safely.

Mr. Grubb was able to call 911 and report his residence was on fire, but was unable to escape himself.

Firefighters battled the blaze which gutted the home for about two hours.

The Grubbs had lived at this residence since 1995. The home is considered a total loss.

The M.S.P. Fire Marshall will be conducting the cause and determination of the fire. Oceana County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation.

Responding to the fire were: Grant Township Fire Department, Shelby-Benona Fire Department, Montague Fire Department, Oceana E.M.S., Grant Township Rescue, American Red Cross, Michigan State Police Fire Marshall and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Department.
