MUSKEGON – The Whitehall Vikings had nine individual champions to lead the team to its seventh straight Greater Muskegon Athletic Association wrestling title Saturday, Jan. 21, at Mona Shores High School.
Four other Vikings placed in the meet to give Whitehall 243 points.
“The boys wrestled really well and it is nice to see the guys reap the rewards of their hard work,” Coach Cliff Sandee said. “As a team we preach peaking at the end of the season. It is our goal to continue to get better and wrestle our best match at the end of the season. I really think our guys are starting to hit their stride we are making that push for the post season.
Winning GMAA titles for Whitehall were: Logan Irey (103), Casey Robinson at (119), Nate Manthei (125), Dillon McCarthy (145), Steven Sika (152), Cameron Lewis (160), Joe Sika (171), Logan Potter (215) and Logan Morningstar (285).
Also scoring for Whitehall were: Alex Whitener (130) 2nd place, Josh Couturier (135) 3rd place, Trip Thommen (140) 4th place, Travis (Tilt) Friend (189) 2nd place.
Reeths-Puffer had two GMAA champions, brothers Tyler Stenberg (135) and Cody Stenberg (140).
Montague had three wrestlers finish runnerup: Hank Martin (112), Sawyer Smith (152) and Chen Martinez (285).
The match of the day was the 285 lb. clash between Logan Morningstar of Whitehall and Chen Martinez of rival Montague. Morningstar earned a hard-fought 3-2 decision after four overtimes.
Holton finished second in the team race, while Reeths-Puffer was third. After that, finishing in order were: Fruitport, Muskegon Mona Shores, Muskegon Orchard View, Montague, Ravenna and Muskegon.
