Whitehall tops rival; comes close to Shelby

WHITEHALL - In Wednesday’s West Michigan Conference duals at Whitehall High School, the host Vikings defeated rival Montague 66-6, but fell to powerhouse Shelby 29-27.

“Today was a great test to see where we are against one of the best teams in the state (Shelby),” Whitehall Coach Cliff Sandee said. “Our boys wrestled really well tonight and learned a lot about themselves as individuals and what it takes to compete as a team. Dual meet wrestling is not an individual sport it is one of the greatest team sports there is.”

Winning two matches for Whitehall on Wednesday were: Logan Irey (103), Nate Manthei (130), Josh Couturier (135), Dillon McCarthy (145), Steven Sika (152), Cameron Lewis (160), Joe Sika (171) and Logan Potter (215).

Coach Chris Pineda’s Montague Wildcats lost a close match to Hart, 33-30. Winning matches for Montague were Eric Groppi (125) and Chen Martinez (285).

Against Whitehall, Chen Martinez got revenge for a 3-2 (4 OT) loss to Logan Morningstar of Whitehall in the GMAA meet Jan. 21, by defeating Morningstar 6-3.
