Traffic in downtownn Whitehall was sparse Friday morning. The city has sent out a survey to residents asking their opinion on the traffic reconfiguartion which has been in place since last May.
WHITEHALL – The Michigan Department of Transportation (M-DOT) said last year it would review a one-year pilot project which restricted lanes and added on-street parking on Colby Street in downtown Whitehall.
Part of that review would be to consider public reaction to the change which was promoted by downtown business owners, community leaders and the city council. And, now that opportunity is available.
The City of Whitehall included a 13-question survey in its recent city newsletter which was mailed to residences in the town. The deadline for returning the surveys to city hall (405 E. Colby Street) is Jan. 27. That will give M-DOT and the city time to consider them before M-DOT will hold a public forum on the plan on Feb. 27.
City Manager Scott Huebler said the questions on the survey were developed by M-DOT and city officials, and reflected questions posed in a survey before the project was put in place - only the tenses were changed. The survey also asks the responders if they support the conversion and provides space for written comments.
Huebler said he is not sure how much weight the survey will have with M-DOT’s decision whether to stay with the conversion. The decision will also consider actual traffic surveys which will gauge the movement of vehicles and safety factors in the three-block area.
“It’s (survey) a part of the decision,” Huebler said. “I’m not sure how heavy a weight it will carry.”
