The weather has taken a turn for the better. At least in the eyes of all the children and volunteers preparing for the January Slide.

This year’s slide on Saturday, Jan. 28, is once again located on Hanson Hill on North Mears in downtown Whitehall. The event is put on by the White Lake Optimist Club and the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Registration for the event starts at noon with races beginning at 1 p.m. Age groups are as follows: sleds: 3 and under, 4-6 year-olds, 7-10 year-olds, 11-17 year-olds and 18 and up.

Saucers/tubes are the same age groups. For snowboarding age groups are 6-10 year-olds, 11-17 year-olds and 18 and up. Parents may ride with their children in the 3 and under age group.

As a grand finale, parents will have a chance to race each other while their children watch. Open sledding is available before and after the contest.

The Optimist Club will serve hot cocoa for those participating. Prizes will be awarded for the first and second place finishers in each contest.

In the case of no snow, the event will be cancelled.
