The Community Foundation for Oceana County’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) awarded $500 in grants in December as a community service project.
The YAC combined their annual holiday bowling party with a grant evaluation of area nonprofit holiday needs. Grants included:
• COVE ($50) – to help purchase toys for children & presents for moms in COVE’s support groups
• Oceana Girl Scouts ($50) – to help supply filled stockings to 1,000-plus area needy children through the combined efforts of Toys for Tots, Girl Scouts and Pentwater VFW.
• Oceana Good Fellows ($50) – to help supply new toys to children during the holiday season.
• Roy’s Kids ($100) – to help with their Christmas giving program, serving 50-plus families. Roy’s Kids is a combined effort of the Oceana Sheriff’s Department and Department of Human Services to reach out to needy/truant kids.
• Food Pantry Support ($50 each) – to Bread of Life/St. Gregory’s Church, First Baptist Church in Pentwater, New Hope Church, Trinity Lutheran Church and West Golden Wesleyan Church.
The YAC was created in 1992 as a special project of the Community Foundation for Oceana County. The council, which has 34 student representatives from all area high schools, two home-school student and two adult advisors, involves young people in solving problems which affect their peers. Members set policy, guide distribution grants and perform community service projects. The students also have the opportunity to attend grantmaking and leadership seminars offered by the Council of Michigan Foundations. The YAC has awarded $342,827 in total grants since 1992.
