Whitehall’s Logan Goins gets inside of Jon Ackley for this shot.
WHITEHALL – With just 3.7 seconds left in the game and trailing 68-67 there was no one North Muskegon wanted more at the free throw line than its senior scoring phenom who already had score 46 points Friday night against the subborn Vikings.
Krannitz came through with two free throws on a bonus opportunity to seal the win while his Norse trailed most of the game.
That more than made up for a missed free throw by Krannitz just 20 seconds earlier when a made would have completed a four-point play as he was fouled while making a three and tied the score at 68-68.
“Those were incredible shots,” Whitehall Coach Nate Aardema described Krannitz’s performance Friday. He said that’s what you expect from a scorer who averages 28 points a game.
And, Aardema did fault his defenders. “John Beeghly and Jordan Vanderleest are two strong defenders. The only way we could have defended him (Krannitz) is if our players were four inches taller.”
When Aardema tried to put a bigger player on Krannitz, the Norse leader beat them to the basket off the dribble. There wasn’t a shot Krannitz didn’t make in the game. He hit seven threes, he drove the lane for layups, her pulled up for jumpers and he raced down the floor after stealing the ball for two.
“I can’t fault my kids effort or energy in this game,” Aardema said.
The Vikings had their own hot shooter in junior Isaac Love who scored 16, including four triples.
Love’s threes helped take the Norse out of their zone defense into a man-to-man.
It took a while for Krannitz to warm up. In the meantime, Whitehall jumped out to a 11-2 lead on a triple by Love. The Norse leader didn’t score until 2:22 left in the first quarter, but by the time the horn went off he had 10. By halftime Krannitz tallied 16.
N. Muskegon pulled within 2 early in the second quarter on a running 8-footer by Krannitz, but Logan Goins answered with a three for Whitehall. A three by Brandon Delarosa later in the quarter put the Vikings up by 11, 35-24.
In the fourth quarter North Muskegon, namely Krannitz, began chipping away at Whitehall’s lead. A big play in the comeback was a steal and pass to teammate Sam Powell by Krannitz. Powell slammed the ball through the rim to bring the Norse within three, 64-61.
Whitehall’s stats included 11 rebounds for Robert Johnson and 5 assists by Sam Kuipers.
The loss dropped Whitehall’s record to 5-5. The Vikings are 3-4 in the West Michigan Conference.
