Part III Music In Our World
Ryan Knapp - The electronic music revolution

Composer-musician Riley Hughes of Montague, in Part II of Music In Our World, pays tribute to classical music composer Arnold Schoenberg (1864-1951) who, he said, “inspired a musical radical revolution. We can go into new universes with new notation techniques.”

That, in fact, is what is at play in another “radical revolution” - electronic music. New musical universes are created with electronic inventions where the audience does not see musicians but, supplied by computer technology, hears music and sounds from stage-based loud speakers, frequently backed up by elaborate light displays.

The equivalent of musical instruments that started this electronic revolution is the Technics SL-1200 turntable. It is the electronic granddaddy that beginning in 1972 enabled the D(isc) J(ockey) to start with night club dates (with the help of later inventions such as Pro Tools) to eventually morph into the monster festivals with audiences ranging from 50,000 to 150,000 (only a dream with most classical music performances).
