MONTAGUE – St. John’s Catholic Church in Claybanks Township will celebrate its 125th anniversary Sunday, Oct. 2.
The church is planning a pig roast for church members on the church lawn following Mass. The church is located on 50th Ave., north of Wilke Rd.
The church has a unique and interesting history, which is detailed in a program that will be distributed at the event.
The following information was obtained from the event program:
The first Catholic church service in Claybanks Township was at the home of Claybanks pioneers Mr. and Mrs. Owen Farrell in the spring of 1857. The six pioneer families represented at the first mass were the Farrells, John Millers, Adam Schillers, Henry Teichthesen, James O’Hanlons and Mrs. Eliza Davis. Father Stannus of Muskegon made the long trip through the woods to conduct the mass. A year later in the spring of 1858, Father Stannus again walked through the wilderness, with an Indian as his guide, to minister to the flock. The services took place again at the Farrell home.
