Fishing Report
Last weeks cold snap has put plenty of ice on most local lakes, Muskegon being an exception (see warnings below), and has more people on the ice. Last weekend saw quads and snowmobiles all across White Lake enjoying the opportunity. Fishing has been a mixed bag. Anyone with smaller local lake hot-spot, or good fish story (with photo) is encouraged to contact me at bergscatch@whitelakebeacon.com I look forward to hearing from you.
White Lake - Pike have been taken from the north end. Perch were in 45-55 feet of water in the central and west sections of the lake, off the Post Office and in Indian Bay, on mousies, spikes, and waxworms. The south side of the down slope into 60 plus feet of water between Dowies and Long Point has been drawing perch anglers, but it has been slow, catches of a dozen good fish requiring 3 hours minimum, with mid-afternoon seeing the best action.
Walleyes are slow in 25 feet on jigging rapalas, color un-important, tipped with a minnow might help. A good size class of fish is being seen for those that do make it out of the hole. Of course, those that don’t make it out are HUGE!
White River - Steelheaders are fishing slammers near the river mouth on the lake with the latest ice becoming safe again.
Muskegon Lake - Anglers should avoid the area between Cottage Grove and Laketon Avenue due to thin ice. The west end of the lake had open water a few days ago as did the sand docks. Pike have been caught between Hartshorn Marina and Fisherman’s Landing or the southeast corner between Grand Valley and the boat launch. Do not go out at night if you are not familiar with the lake. Shallow water in the northwest corner is a good spot for bluegills, Snug Harbor reported some very good sized bluegills mid-week. Perch anglers are taking fish but lots of small ones are also biting. Wait for that slow bite to reel in the bigger fish.
Muskegon River - Steelhead are still being caught up near Bridgeton. Try spikes, minnows, wax worms or spawn.
