  Mixed results for Rockets

The Reeths-Puffer Rocket hockey team has had a mixed couple of weeks.

Friday, Jan. 22, the Rockets fell to Forest Hills Central 4-1. After a scoreless first period, Forest Hills put two goals up early in the second — the first a 5-on-3, the second a 5-on-4 — to take the lead. Three minutes into the third, Reeths-Puffer got on the board, on a Keith Robbins goal, assisted by Dean and Ryan Griffin. But Central scored minutes later to make it 3-1, and then nabbed an empty-netter near the end of the game to provide the final result.

The Rockets were outshot 41-18, as Rocket goalkeeper Eddie Young turned back 37 attempts.

“Young played an outstanding game,” said Rocket head coach Eric Sikkenga.

Last week, the Rockets picked a 3-2 victory over Jenison at the McMichigan Showcase.

Jenison’s Alex Johnson scored minutes into the second period, while teammate Christian Skinner added another with just 44 seconds left in the period.

But it was all Reeths-Puffer the rest of the way, as Robbins cut the Jenison lead to one just 39 second into the third. Teammate Harry Braafhart tied the game two minutes later, assistted by Ryan Griffin, and the Rockets’ Dustyn Corpe put in the game winner on a power play, with Young getting the assists, with about five minutes remaining.

Finally, last Friday, the Rockets dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Detroit Country Day.

A goal by Rocket Dean Griffin, assisted by Braafhart and Ben Wheeler, gave the Rockets the 1-0 lead early in the second, though the Yellowjackets’ Sam Resk answered with a goal minutes later to knot things at 1-all.

The Yellowjackets’ Michael VanAntwerp netted the winning goal in overtime on a power play.
