FRUITPORT — Going into last weekend’s Greater Muskegon Athletic Association wrestling meet, the burning question amounted to: Will the Whitehall Vikings have enough to win the city title four-straight years?

Consider that question answered in the stoutest of terms.

Whitehall took the title going away, getting place finishes 12 of the 14 weight classes, including seven city championship performances, to take the team title with 225.5 points. Reeths-Puffer was second with 164 points, and, helping complete White Lake’s dominance over the field, Montague was fourth with 89 points. Fruitport was third with 117 points.

“I would have loved to see all 14 of our wrestlers place, and I think we could have had two more in the finals,” said Whitehall head coach Cliff Sandee. “But all-in-all, the boys wrestled tough. It was a good boost for us as we are preparing for our post season run.”

Scoring title-round championship for the Vikings were Casey Robinson (112 lbs.), Nate Zach (119 lbs.), Chris Bobryk (130 lbs.), James Champion (145 lbs.), Sam Pladies (152 lbs.), Ryan Friend (160 lbs.) and D’Mario Lewis (171 lbs.). Nate Manthei (103 lbs.) and Dillon McCarthy (140 lbs.) both fell in the finals round.

“Sending the senior class out on top was great,” said Sandee, about a senior class that has never known defeat at the city meet. “The team took a lot of pride in making sure that our seniors won their fourth-straight city title.”

Sandee praised his large coaching staff — which includes Anthony Varela, Jason Johnson, PJ Mitchell, Alex Trevino, Rick Champion, Josh Robart, Tom Robinson, Craig Christensen, Shane Boyer and Dick Boyer. “Our team is very lucky to have the help that we do,” said Sandee. “Our assistant coaches put their heart and soul into this program and the boys do a great job learning from these outstanding coaches.”

He added: “This is a perfect example of iron sharpening iron. Our outstanding coaching staff is working their butts off with these kids and our wrestlers are so coachable that they are getting better every day.”

Reeths-Puffer had a great day as well, getting finals-round titles from Tyler Stenberg (103 lbs.), Cody Stenberg (135 lbs.), Jake Connell (140 lbs.), and Dan Barnhart (285 lbs.), who won the heavy weight championship over Montague’s Chen Martinez in a 3-2 tie-breaker match. The Rockets got runners-up finishes from KC Hittle (125 lbs.), Ryan Connell (152 lbs.) and Jamie Neiger-Bickham (160 lbs.). Levi Bogue (145 lbs.) and Jamie Chrystler (215 lbs.) both won their consolation-round matches for Reeths-Puffer.

Montague’s Manny Villeda (215 lbs.) was the Wildcats’ lone championship-round title winner, though the team did get runners-up finishes from Martinez and Jordan Degen (171 lbs.), as well as consolation-finals titles from Hank Martin (103 lbs.) Dylan Lohman (119 lbs.), and consolation runners-up finishes from Cameron Ferrier (130 lbs.) and Jacob Snowdin (145 lbs.).

“This day was a great day for our team,” said Montague head coach Jay Mulder. “We challenged the team to finish in the Top 5 and they did that. Everyone wrestled very hard today. The coaching staff was extremely proud of the teams’ effort.”
