Posted: 1-4-2010 HarborLight Movie Night series continues at Howmet Playhouse |
| |
The HarborLight Movie Night series, jointly sponsored by HarborLight Credit Union, White Lake Community Library, the Arts Council of White Lake, and the Howmet Playhouse will kick off the new year with a Thursday, Jan. 7, showing of “Inherit the Wind” at the Howmet Playhouse.
This gripping adaptation of the Jerome Lawrence-Robert E. Lee play examines an issue that still causes great controversy: the role religion should play in the schools. Bertram T. Cates is arrested and put on trial for teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution in his classroom. The incident causes a furor in the religious southern community where he lives and Matthew Harrison Brady, a famous fundamentalist attorney, arrives to prosecute the young teacher.
Luckily for Cates, the equally-acclaimed lawyer Henry Drummond agrees to defend him. As a result, the two master attorneys square off in the courtroom while the teacher’s life hangs in the balance.
The movie is directed by Stanley Kramer and stars such mega-actors as Spencer Tracy, Fredrick March, Gene Kelly and Florence Eldridge.
All movies begin at 7 p.m. and concessions are available for a nominal fee. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Donations to offset movie costs are always welcome.
This thought-provoking film promises to spark good discussion so gather your family and friends and head to the Howmet.
