WHITEHALL — Whitehall appears to be rounding into form at the perfect time as the season winds down.

The Vikings looked like a confident, strong bunch as they dispatched North Muskegon 66-47 Thursday night in a West Michigan Conference showdown.

Whitehall guard Devontae Vance had his best game of the year, scoring 16 points and running a Vikings’ offense that was hitting on all cylinders.

“He’s just finally started to get comfortable,” Whitehall coach Nate Aardema said of the senior guard. “He’s such a great athlete, and he’s just scratching the surface of his basketball ability, really. He’s learning how to run a team, which is cool.”

Montague wins WMC title

MONTAGUE — The Montague Wildcats clinched the West Michigan Conference title Thursday night, defeating Mason County Central 63-50 in their final home league game.

The Wildcats (15-1, 12-1 WMC) also won their 13th game in a row, as they haven’t lost since Dec. 11 at Shelby.

Montague opened up a 31-19 lead at the halftime break over the Spartans and was able to maintain that lead throughout the second half.

Vikes drop tight one to Spartans

SCOTTVILLE — The Whitehall Vikings just missed a shot at breaking into the top half of the West Michigan Conference Tuesday night, as their halftime lead evaporated in the third quarter of a 57-52 loss to the Mason County Central Spartans.

Mason County was on fire from the field in the pivotal third frame, knocking down eight shots and outscoring the Vikings (6-10, 6-6 WMC) 20-9 to erase what was a 29-25 Whitehall lead at the break.

‘Cats win 12th straight

MUSKEGON — Montague kept its roll going Tuesday night, dispatching North Muskegon 66-48 on the road for its 12th straight win.

The Wildcats (14-1, 11-1 West Michigan Conference) clinched at least a share of the WMC title with the victory.

Holland edges Rockets 68-60

HOLLAND — A third-quarter lapse proved costly to the Reeths-Puffer Rockets Tuesday night, as R-P dropped a 68-60 decision in nonconference play to Holland.

The Dutch outscored Reeths-Puffer 24-13 in the decisive frame after the game had gone into halftime tied up at 30.

R-P edged out by Union

GRAND RAPIDS — Reeths-Puffer fell in an O-K Black Conference make-up game Monday night at Union by a 55-52 margin.

The game was moved to Monday after being delayed from last Friday.

The Rockets held a three-point lead after three quarters but couldn’t hold it, as the Red Hawks rallied with a 17-11 fourth-quarter scoring run.
