Kammi Jarvis stands in front of her fifth grade classroom at Ealy Elementary School in Whitehall. She won an expense paid trip for she and her mom to Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans for her winning entry in the national Oatmeal Challenge.

Kammi received that opportunity as the Grand Prize winner of the Fuel Up to Play 60 Oatmeal Challenge. As the top winner of the nationwide contest, she won an all-expense paid trip for two to the Super Bowl, including spending Saturday with a player of her choice among the Super Bowl teams.

She will have the time of her life at the epic sporting event which will be seen on television by millions of viewers across the U.S. and in 14 foreign countries.

Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program founded by the National Dairy Council and NFL, in collaboration with USDA, that empowers students to take charge in making small, everyday changes at school. Students can win cool prizes, like an NFL player visit or Super Bowl tickets, for choosing good-for-you foods and getting active for at least 60 minutes every day.

Kammi’s winning entry is “Oatmealicious.”

The challenge asked students to send in their idea for how their school should serve up an oatmeal breakfast everyone will love.

“I was shocked,” Kammi recalled when she learned she was the grand prize winner of a trip to the Super Bowl.

And, what player did she hope to spend a day with on Saturday.

Ray Lewis, the star linebacker for the Ravens.

“My brother helped me make my decision. He told me Ray Lewis is retiring after the Super Bowl and it will be the last chance to get his autograph while he is still playing.”

Kammi said she also learned she will meet other Super Bowl players at a Saturday event, and she can get up to three autographs from each one. And, she will be filmed in a commercial for Fuel Up to Play 60.

The winner said her, and her family’s, favorite NFL team is the New England Patriots. “My father said my brother’s middle name, Brady, was named after Tom Brady. But, he was named after “The Brady Bunch” (sitcom 1969-1974, now in reruns).

And, Tom Brady is her favorite player.

The 10-year-old said ReNae Tindall, her physical education and leadership teacher, presented the Oatmeal Challenge to her students. The school participates in Fuel Up to Play 60, which helps students track their exercise and nutrition.

Tindall said five students took up the Oatmeal Challenge, and she helped them send in their entry.

In addition to her Super Bowl trip, the grand prize winner received $1,000 which will to toward implementing her program at school.

Kammi’s entry calls for setting up an oatmeal stand in the cafeteria during the breakfast period.

Students will come up to the stand and ask for one of several special oatmeal recipes developed by Kammi.

Kammi has 10 recipes, using fruit toppings, and named after NFL teams.

Some of her recipes include: The Green Grape Packers, the Minnesota Blueberry Yogurt and granola, and the Chicago Rasp“bear”y. Other teams, like San Francisco (strawberries), Miami (oranges, blueberries, maple), Pittsburgh (strawberries, lemon and blueberries), Indianapolis (blueberries and sugar) and Detroit (blueberries) have fruit to match team colors. She even has a Whitehall flavor with red applies and lemon juice.

Kammi designed stickers to label the oatmeal bowls by the team flavors, and the stand will have a large sign and a menu.

“I think this will be a fun and creative way to serve oatmeal,” wrote Kammi in her entry. “It is healthy, and you can learn about football. I’m going to start it on my own, and if it gets popular, I will ask other kids to help me serve.”

Kammi said the school’s food service director, Dan Gorman, asked her to take the oatmeal stand to other schools in the district..

The winner said her mother, Dawanna White, helped her with the project by providing the toppings to put with oatmeal during taste testing.

So, she selected her mother, as the parent who is accompanying her at the Super Bowl. The two flew to New Orleans on Friday and will return home on Monday.
