Students struck by car Thursday

BLUE LAKE TWP. – Two Whitehall students were injured while walking to their bus stop early Thursday morning when struck by an SUV which slid out of control on snow covered and icy road conditions, according to the Michigan State Police Rockford Post.

The accident occurred on White Lake Drive near Malta Road at 6:50 a.m.

Injured were 16-year-old Bruce Edward Bower, and 13-year-old Travis Scott Nelson.

According to the State Police press release the two boys were transported to the Hackley Campus of Mercy Health Partners with the parents, and were reported to have only minor injuries. However, Nelson was later that day transferred to the Spectrum Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The boys were struck by a Buick Crossover driven by Loral Fuller of Whitehall which was eastbound on White Lake Drive when it crossed the centerline, hit the boys and then struck a tree. One of the boys was struck head on, while the other was hit by the side of the vehicle.

Assisting the State Police at the scene were the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department, Blue Lake Fire Department and Dalton Township Fire Department.

No citations have been issued and the crash remains under investigation.
