Whitehall school board selects its officers
It didnt take long for the Whitehall District Schools Board of Education to elect its officers for the upcoming year.
In a seven-minute organizational meeting last Monday night three of the officers were unanimously re-elected from last year, and a new secretary was also unanimously elected. Thomas Mallory was elected by the board members present to take over the secretary position left vacant when board member Julie MacArthur chose not to run for re-election in the November, 2012 election.
Returning as Board President is Michael Sutton. Christopher Mahoney is back as vice-president and Steve Markel continues as treasurer.
Board members also were appointed to committee assignments. Sutton said the board members will maintain their current committee assignments, and new board member, Douglas Ogden, will fill the assignments previously held by MacArthur.
Only four of the seven board members were present at the organizational meeting. Absent were Ogden who had a work conflict, Mallory whose mother passed away Jan. 20, and Randall Fielstra who attended the regular meeting following the organizational meeting.
MAPS board appoints new officers
After years of re-appointing the same president of the MAPS school board, this year there is a change.
Lee Suits was not re-elected in the November 2012 general election; therefore, the board appointed Chris Stark to the position of president at the meeting on Wednesday (Jan. 30).
A motion was made by board member Cindy Francis and supported by Blair Moreau to elect Stark as president. The board voted unanimously.
Stark was first elected to the MAPS board in 2006 and previously held the positions of trustee and most recently, vice-president. She is a graduate of MAPS and is employed by Grand Rapids Ophthalmology. She also has two children who attend MAPS.
After another unanimous vote, Cindy Francis was appointed vice-president of the board. She was previously the secretary and has served multiple terms on the board.
Judy Near was voted secretary and Dick Hunt was re-appointed treasurer. Near was first elected to the board in 2004; Hunt was first elected to the board in 1999.
