The University of Michigan School of Nursing announced recently that Bloomington native and Montague High School graduate, Joslyn Jackson, has been selected as one of six students participating in the inaugural Hillman Scholars Program.

The program creates doctoral nurse leaders who are prepared to apply science that will be at the forefront of health care. The students are expected to strive for research that can affect important changes in policy and improve public health. UMSN is one of only three schools nationally to offer this program.

Throughout her five years in the program, Jackson will be studying rural medicine, sexual health and data collection processes with her faculty mentor Dr. Marjorie McCullagh. Upon completion she will earn a PhD.

When asked why she pursued the Hillman Scholars Program, Jackson noted that she has always held a passion for research. Upon pursuing nursing, she worried that she might lose the research component of her coursework, but when the Hillman Scholars Program presented itself, she knew immediately that this path would lead her to the career she envisioned for herself.

Jackson is currently a junior in the U of M School of Nursing.
