Relay for Life kicks off 20th year

For the 20th year, White Lake Area residents will bring awareness and raise funds for the battle against cancer through the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event.

The kickoff event for the fundraising push will be held Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Algot Johnson American Legion Post 69 in Whitehall.

And, the theme of this years White Lake Area Relay for Life is Relay Family Reunion - 20 years of Fighting.

The kickoff program will begin at 6 p.m., and will include information materials for fundraising teams, and persons interested in joining the effort., guests speakers and refreshments.

Hamburgers will be available for sale through the American Legions hamburger night, and other free refreshments - cupcakes, chips and bottled water - will be offered.

In keeping with the events theme, Dan Pflug will speak about his familys second battle with cancer this past year.

The American Legion Riders relay team is planning a Hot Pork Sandwich Dinner on March 14, 5-7 p.m. and a Flea Market on March 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both events will be at American Legion Post 69.

Koehler said this years fundraising goal is $58,000, and currently there are 12 teams registered. The events goal is for 20 teams.

The local relay also has a goal of signing up 20 members and $250 for the ACS CAN fight back challenge.
