This will be sure to capture and intrigue as Swan shares his many life’s experiences in his unique and remarkable way. It will be a unique opportunity to hear firsthand accounts from someone of Swan’s caliber who has worked with today’s greatest conductors and performers.

Swan was raised in Norwalk, Conn. and attended Indiana University’s world renowned music school where he received his Bachelor’s, Master’s with Highest Distinction and Performer’s Certificate. He studied viola with David Dawson and chamber music with William Primrose, Josef Gingold, Janos Starker, György Sebök and Menahem Pressler.

Swan was appointed to the viola section of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by Sir Georg Solti in 1972. For many years Swan was principal viola of Chicago’s Music of the Baroque and the Ars Viva! Orchestra, and a founding member of the Evanston Chamber Ensemble. He has also appeared as guest artist with the Fine Arts Quartet, the Vermeer Quartet, and the Chicago Chamber Musicians. From 1972 until 1980 he was professor of viola at Northwestern University where he also served as violist of the Eckstein String Quartet.

Swan loves fly fishing, bird hunting over pointing dogs, golf, chess and red wine which is why his chess is only adequate to mediocre. He recently retired from the CSO and currently serves on the board of Music & Performing Arts and on the Arts Council of White Lake board, is an Artistic Advisor of the White Lake Chamber Music Festival, and performs regularly and coaches at this and other festivals. He spends most of his time in Michigan enjoying a traffic-free life.
