The sudden Arctic outbreak is welcomed by hardwater enthusiasts, hoping to get safe ice back on their favorite fishing spot. As of Friday most lakes had still not put enough ice back on to make them safe, but a few smaller lakes that didn’t lose ice cover during the thaw may be OK. Don’t go alone. If we can just get a skim on some larger lakes the deep freeze predicted for early in the upcoming week might make the deep water areas accessible before the season is over. I’ve got my fingers crossed.
White Lake – Narrows were open early in the week but did freeze over by week’s end. Wesley’s had ice on Friday. For the latest info on White Lake call Johnson’s Great Outdoors at 231-893-6688.
White River – A few steelhead reported in the river but fishing had been tough. Many miles of walking between hits. Spawn sacks drifted below bobber working well.
Muskegon – Snug Harbor had just frozen over again Friday. Call Snug Harbor Outfitters at 231-719-0759 for the latest information on ice conditions. They are right across from the launch and know conditions firsthand.
Muskegon River – Water levels were up but those fly fishing have caught steelhead when using bright colored flies.
Hamlin Lake – Open water between Wilson Hill park and the narrows, but some ice was setting up to the east on the North Arm. For up to date Hamlin information call Hamlin Grocery at 231-843-2058.
Hart Lake – All the ice had gone out prior to the cold snap.
Pere Marquette River – Some browns and steelhead reported.
