Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association (SPLKA) is seeking volunteer lighthouse keepers to operate its four historic structures.

SPLKA is a Ludington-based nonprofit organization that seeks to preserve Michigan’s maritime history by promoting and restoring four lighthouses located between Whitehall and Ludington along Lake Michigan.

Since 1987, when local Ludington volunteers helped to save Big Sable Point from rising lake levels, SPLKA has been working hard to promote West Michigan’s lighthouse restoration.

Twenty-five years later, SPLKA manages the operation and preservation of the Ludington North Breakwater Light, Little Sable Point and the White River Light Station in addition to Big Sable Point.

Volunteers are the core of these operations, and with their help, the lights remain open for climbing, lakeshore viewing and learning, from May until October. In 2012 alone, nearly 75,000 visitors climbed these four towers, two of which are among the tallest in Michigan.
