Before I came to Michigan, my ice fishing style was purely old school. In the absence of any significant game fish populations, my hard water experience was primarily with panfish, mostly bluegills, stripers and crappies. It wasn’t until I found myself parked over deep water on a West Michigan lake jigging for walleyes that I even considered the use of electronics as part of my bag of tricks to put fish on ice. I was new to walleye fishing, so the addition of a flasher unit seemed a basic part of the equipment package when pursuing this fish rather than a technological leap forward in all ice fishing.

But I pretty much stuck to my old school ways when it came to bluegills. I knew what kind of water held my favorite filets, I knew what baits they liked, I knew what equipment worked well, and it was pretty simple. A bell sinker with an alligator clip was attached to your hook, allowed to free fall to the bottom, and you knew how deep the water was. Oh so analog! But hey, it worked.
