Fishing Report

The question on every hard-water angler’s lips is the same. “Where is the good ice?” For most of the holidays the answer was “north,” but by the time the new year rolled around, it didn’t require a three-hour drive to get to a lake that could be safely walked upon.

This made ice fishermen happier than a squirrel that just figured out how to defeat the bird feeder. We all have our fingers crossed that the predicted warm-up next week only means that we’ll get thawing at a ratio of about 2 to 1 when the mercury climbs above freezing for about 8 daylight hours, but dips down to ice making temps over night. The shortage of snow will help.

White Lake – A few panfish have been taken at Wesley’s, and some are fishing Tannery Bay, but ice conditions vary. The revamped Lyons Den had not seen any activity yet, and there is some concern that the low water levels may negatively impact the fishing there. For the latest info on White Lake call Johnson’s Great Outdoors at 231-893-6688.

White River – No reports, but steelhead should be settled in for the winter. Deep holes and much patience are the key.

Muskegon — A few have fished the Conservation Club and reported decent catches of bluegills. Snug harbor was just fishable toward the end of the week, and bluegills were being taken with some significant sorting. Snug Harbor Outfitters is now open across from the park, and is your new source for all things finned furred and feathered. Give them a call at 231-719-0759 for the latest information.

Muskegon River — Steelhead are being taken on spawn and egg imitations.

Pentwater – Ice was not yet safe.

Hamlin Lake – Ice was good enough to host a small army of fishermen on the north arm on New Year’s Day, bluegills aplenty but most were small. For up to date Hamlin information call Hamlin Grocery at 231-843-2058.

Hart Lake – Three to four inches and good bluegill action found above the bridge.

Pere Marquette Lake — Just froze over earlier in the week, no safe ice reported yet.
