Swing into the New Year with jazz icon on Dec. 29

Evans Hyde

Join music fans and New Year’s revelers on Dec. 29 at 7:30 pm at the Howmet Playhouse as we Swing into the New Year for an evening of big-band style jazz with West Michigan jazz icon Edye Evans Hyde.

The night is sure to be a grand way to celebrate the New Year with a cash bar, hosted by the Killer Blues and Lemon Creek Winery, and an afterglow party on the Playhouse stage with the musicians after the show.

Evans Hyde will perform with a jazz quartet made up of well-known Michigan musicians: Terry Lower on piano, Tom Lockwood on bass, Evan Hyde on drums, and Rob Smith on saxophone.

The 2011 West Michigan Jazz Society Musician of the Year, Edye Evans Hyde has been singing jazz, blues and pop music for over 30 years in West Michigan, Los Angeles, Asia and Europe. She has shared the stage with world renowned blues singer Linda Hopkins, pop singer Michael Bolton, Maria Muldaur, actress Connie Stevens, the late Ray Charles and Cuban trumpet player, Arturo Sandoval. Evans Hyde’s theatrical performances have included principal roles in Dream Girls, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Smokey Joe’s Café, Little Shop of Horrors, Blues For an Alabama Sky, Intimate Apparel, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, and Ragtime.

Evans Hyde has also appeared with the Grand Rapids Symphony and The West Shore Symphony performing songs from her acclaimed CDs Girl Talk, and Lady with a Song. Her latest CD is Magic in His Eyes. After an absence from the Muskegon music scene, the playhouse is happy to welcome her back to the lakeshore.

Lower, Lockwood, Hyde, and Smith are all popular musicians on the Michigan and national jazz scene, performing regularly with Evans Hyde and other nationally recognized musicians.

Doors for the The Swing into the New Year celebration will open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door, and include the afterglow party. Tickets may be purchased at Whitehall City Hall or at the door; cash or check only. For more information, call 231-894-4048 or visit the Playhouse website at www.howmetplayhouse.org.

The afterglow party is sponsored by the Killer Blues Headstone Project of Whitehall, and Lemon Creek Winery of Grand Haven/Berrien Springs. It will feature Lemon Creek Wine, Michigan beer, hor d’oeuvres and other beverages.
