Sheriff warns against celebratory gunfire

Area Law Enforcement officials want to remind all citizens that celebrating the Christmas and New Year holiday with the reckless and irresponsible shooting of firearms in the air is not only unlawful, but dangerous, according to Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler.

Roesler wrote that the projectile that goes into the air has to come down. It can cause property damage and more importantly may cause serious injury or death. A bullet fired into the air can climb up to two miles. When it falls back to earth, it can reach a speed of 300 to 700 feet per second. A velocity of only 200 feet per second is sufficient to penetrate the human skull.

“We are asking that citizens please follow these safety tips during their Holiday celebrations,” Roesler added.

• Do Not shoot firearms as a means of celebration.

• Party hosts should prohibit the shooting of firearms.

• Alcohol and firearms are never a good combination

• Any witnesses to celebratory gunfire should call 911 and report it.

“Muskegon County Law Enforcement Agencies want everyone to have a safe and happy holiday season,” wrote Roesler. “Please refrain from the use of firearms and please drink responsibly. Thank You.”
