Turnovers fuel Shelby in Vikings’ loss

WHITEHALL — A third-quarter lapse cost the Whitehall Vikings a shot at a big win Thursday night at home, but coach Nate Aardema can tell his team is improving game by game.

The Vikings were tied with Shelby at the halftime break, but a run of turnovers in the third quarter helped the Tigers take control, sending Whitehall to a 58-49 loss.

“In high school basketball or in any basketball, those little lapses are enough to cost you the game,” Aardema said. “We had a couple of turnovers, and we broke down defensively a few times too. That was it. And to catch up, we have to do things we’re not necessarily as comfortable doing.”

Whitehall dropped by Heights

WHITEHALL — The Whitehall Vikings dropped to 1-4 Tuesday night, taking a tough loss to Muskegon Heights, 78-45.

Whitehall trailed by nine after a quarter and was never able to overcome the early deficit. The Vikes had a tough time defending Jeff Jordan and Eddie Torres, who scored 23 and 25 points respectively to lead the Tigers. Aaron Sydnor also added 11 for Muskegon Heights.

Montague downs Ravenna 71-49

RAVENNA — Putting three players into double figures gave the Montague Wildcats the balance they needed to weather solid early play from Ravenna and dispatch the Bulldogs Thursday night, 71-49, for their third straight win.

Chase Casebolt led Montague (5-1, 3-1 West Michigan Conference) with 21 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Luke VanBoxel had 17 points and Brandon Moore added 12.

Moore scores 1,000th point, Cats win

MONTAGUE — Montague’s Brandon Moore passed the 1,000-point plateau for his career Monday night, and the Wildcats piled up 34 first-quarter points on their way to an impressive 78-34 win over Orchard View in nonconference play Monday night.

Reeths-Puffer beats Cardinals

MUSKEGON — The Reeths-Puffer Rockets won their second straight game Friday night, defeating Orchard View 53-38. The win earned R-P a sweep of the boys/girls doubleheader at OV.

Rockets top Fruitport

MUSKEGON — Reeths-Puffer improved to 2-1 on the season Tuesday night with a 53-42 victory over the Fruitport Trojans.
