Whitehall native takes command of Naval ship

Jerry and Lee Dickinson of Whitehall recently had a proud moment as parents as few can experience.

Their son, Commander Thomas Dickinson, a 1991 graduate of Whitehall High School, took over command of the USS Barry (DDG 52) during a a change of command ceremony Nov. 30 in Norfolk, Virginia where the ship was docked.

Also attending the ceremony was Commander Dickinsons family, and Whitehall native Kristin Eilers Smoot, her husband Bill, daughter Meghan, and son Garrett.

Commander Dickinson relieved Cmdr. Kevin Byrne as commanding officer.
