Mrs. Leatrice Y. McGuigan
 
Leatrice Yvonne McGuigan, 80, of North Muskegon, MI, passed away on December 7, 2012.

The FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at 1:00 pm Sunday, December 23rd at Lebanon Lutheran Church, 1101 S. Mears Ave., Whitehall, MI. VISITATION will be held at 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Saturday, December 22nd at Clock Funeral Home of White Lake, 413 S. Mears Ave., Whitehall, MI.

Leatrice Skjerven was born on May 28, 1932 in Park River, ND to William & Gudrun (Thorsteinson) Skjerven. She graduated from Park River Agricultural School and Valley City State Teacher’s College.

Leatrice taught school in Leonard, ND where she met her husband, James McGuigan. They married on June 27, 1954 in Park River. Leatrice and Jim moved to South Bend, IN , in 1962, where she taught for the South Bend School Corporation, and Head Start. They moved to Whitehall, Michigan in 1993 where Lea continued to educate through volunteering at the local schools. While living in South Bend she was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and then Lebanon Lutheran Church in Whitehall, MI.

Her love for North Dakota, her Norwegian heritage, books, education , and all things Notre Dame football ,was only surpassed by the love she felt for her 5 grandchildren. The amazing adults they have become is evidence of her influence in their lives.

Leatrice is survived by her children, Mike (Jill VanWieren) McGuigan of Douglas, MI, Chris (Gary Neal) McGuigan of North Muskegon, MI, Pat (DeVon) Swihart of Mishawaka, IN, her grandchildren, Lauren (Nick Bailey) Swihart, Stephen Swihart, Catherine Neal, Alex Neal, and Lindsay Neal. Also, her brother, Richard (Carol Ann) Skjerven, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, a brother WC Skjerven, and a sister, Donna Lou Chapman.

The family especially would like to thank the wonderful and caring folks of Life Circles at Tanglewood for adding so much to the lives of so many, certainly our mom’s and ours.
