The “Copper Fish” sculpture will be located behind this bench near the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce depot office and alongside the White Lake Pathway in Whitehall’s Covell Park.
The Arts Council of White Lake (ACWL) and the City of Whitehall have come to an agreement for the location of the newest sculpture on the non-profit’s Art Walk.
The Whitehall city council, at its Nov. 27 meeting, approved a site for the “copper fish” sculpture in Covell Park. A motion to approve the site passed by a 6-0 margin.
The agreed upon site is between the White Lake Pathway and the White River marsh, near the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce depot office. It was near ACWL’s requested site which was tabled at the council’s Sept. 11 meeting.
The move to the new site retains an open view of the marsh from the pathway, and still meets the ACWL’s criteria of placing sculptures in easy view of the pathway and a major street (BR-31). Also located in Covell Park is the Art Walk’s Sailboat/Trees sculpture.
The proposed sculpture is a two-dimensional weathers-copper representations of three fish, a salmon/steelhead trout, a largemouth bass and a bluegill. The fish, the largest 10 feet in width, will be suspended on a pole. The fish figures will be backed by plywood and filled with foam, for strength.
The arts council said the location is also appropriate because the fish are a representation of three native fish in local waters.
The city approved a lease of land to ACWL for the sculpture site. The sculpture will become city property, but City Manager Scott Huebler told the council the city will have no obligation to maintain it.
