Four area cross-country runners were named to the all-West Michigan Conference first team when the teams were announced recently, including two from the state-finalist Whitehall boys team, the first time the school produced a team finalist in Division 2.
The top 10 runners in each gender were named to the first team.
Logan Irey and Alex Dennis received first-team nods among the boys team after placing seventh and ninth respectively in the WMC over the course of the season. Both were first-year runners on the team, with Dennis as a freshman and Irey as a senior. Denniss teammates referred to him earlier this year as the fastest freshman in Vikings history. Ireys best finish was sixth during the conference jamborees, while Dennis placed as high as fifth.
Jessica Harris represented the Viking girls on the all-WMC team after placing second in the league during the jamborees, trailing only Emily Witham of North Muskegon. She placed second in three of the four jamborees in which she raced.
Montagues Kenadee Shugars also obtained all-WMC first team honors, placing ninth in the conference during the jamborees. Shugarss best finish during the season was seventh.
Four Vikings got honorable mention all-league recognition as well, which went to runners who placed 11th through 15th in the league. Keaton Smith, Brayden Berson and Mitch Boyce earned recognition for the boys by placing 11th through 13th, while Kallan Sawyer got the nod from the girls team after placing 15th in the WMC.
The Vikings boys also achieved a first in the classroom this season as the team was named academic all-state in Division 2 for the first time.. Their cumulative grade point average of 3.6 ranked 11th in the state.
