Berg's Catch of the Day

Whitefish have dominated the fishing scene for the past couple of weeks, but as those numbers start to slack off look to see more walleyes off the pier heads and steelhead from the beach. Now through ice-up is the best time to use jigging spoons to find trophy size walleyes and smallmouth bass. Look for shelf areas adjacent to deeper water.

Note: Low water levels have caused a number of problems, be careful in choosing your launch site.

White Lake – Some perch are being caught in the deep slot south of the channel exit from the lake, but a good deal of culling is needed to get a bucket of these tasty fish in a decent size. Wigglers best if you can find them. For the latest info on White Lake call Johnson’s Great Outdoors at 231-893-6688.

White River – Water is extremely low, but steelhead continue to move up the river, including a fresh push of some larger fish. Salmon spawn is most effective. Approach holes with caution to avoid spooking fish.

Whitehall/Montague – Whitefish are still active, but numbers seem to be dropping.

Muskegon - Whitefish are still in at night, but beginning to slow by mid-week.

Muskegon River – Steelhead were caught with the colder temperatures, however catch rates were spotty. Many are fly fishing. A couple large pike were also caught as this is their time to feed.

Grand Haven – Pier anglers continue to catch whitefish and the occasional steelhead..

Pentwater – Pier anglers targeting steelhead are having mixed results, days with a light chop are best.

Hamlin Lake – No reports. For up to date Hamlin information call Hamlin Grocery at 231-843-2058.

Ludington – Pier and surf anglers are catching a few fish.

Pere Marquette River – Steelhead moving up including some larger fish. Those fly-fishing have had some success on spawn imitations.
