The Hackley House dining room is decorated for the holidays like it would have been in the late 19th century.

The three historic sites of the Lakeshore Museum Center have been decorated for the holidays by local service organizations and Museum volunteers and curators. Antique and handmade ornaments will take visitors back to the late 1800s in the Hackley House and Fire Barn Museum, to the early 1920s in the Hume House and the Depression Era in the Scolnik House.

New this season, the Hume house is being interpreted through the spirit of Clement Clarke Moore and his famous poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Instead of the traditional walk through tour of decorated rooms, museum curators have created their own take on the famous poem. Each room is decorated to reflect a different part of the poem. Tour guides in costume, will lead visitors through the house and recite the Hume version of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.

In the Hackley house, guides are stationed throughout the rooms and will interpret the decorations of the rooms for visitors and answer any questions. Tours begin in the City Barn where guests will find a photo opportunity near a replica carriage. The Museum Store is also located in the City Barn and the exhibit “From Sawdust to Symphonies” is on display on the second floor. Tours at the Hackley & Hume Historic Site are $3 for guests 13 and older; guests 12 and younger are admitted free. The Hackley & Hume site is located at 484 W. Webster at Sixth Street.

At the Scolnik House, decorations are simple reflecting a time when most families were struggling to make do. Gifts exchanged at the time were often oranges, nuts and handmade items. On the second floor of the home, Hanukkah is being celebrated.

Next door at the Fire Barn Museum visitors will see simple decorations and gifts and treats the neighbors might have dropped off for the firemen and the fire station horses. Tours of the Scolnik House, 504 W.Clay Ave. and Fire Barn, 510 W. Clay Ave. are free for all guests.
