Long-time board member ousted

Montague Area Public Schools Board of Education will lose its president after 24 years of service.

Wanda Lee Suits lost to incumbent Blair Moreau and newcomer Michael Moore II in a three-person runoff for two seats. Suits received 1,750 votes while Moore received 1,894 and Moreau received 2,047 (totals include Oceana County votes).

“It has been my pleasure to serve on the school board of Montague Area Public Schools for 24 plus years,” Suits said. “While I will miss serving as a board member, I am confident the school staff and school board will continue to serve our children and families in outstanding ways.”

The Reeths-Puffer School Board had two seats up for election, and both incumbents, Mary Schaab and Kathy Zahl, were re-elected. Schaab received 6,014 votes and Zahl received 5,528. Write-in candidate votes totaled 123.

Because of the write-in candidates for the Whitehall School Board, official results won’t be in until the votes for the write-in candidates are reviewed by the Board of Canvassers. The only candidate on the ballot, curring board vice-president Christopher G. Mahony, received 3,611 votes. Three candidates who filed as write-ins received a total of 649 votes. Doug Ogden, Mark Miller and Andy Fink all filed for a four-year position.

In other school board races:

Muskegon Comm. College Board of Trustees:

Donald Crandall

Sean Mullally

Roy Portenga (Partial Term)
