Montague bows out to WMC in finals

MUSKEGON Montague battled hard to push seventh-ranked Western Michigan Christian in Friday nights North Muskegon district volleyball final, but the Wildcats couldnt quite pull the upset.

The Cats lost two tight games early but ran out of steam in game three to drop a 25-22, 25-18, 25-9 decision to WMC to end their season.

Montague blasts Muskegon Heights

MUSKEGON Montague had no trouble dispatching Muskegon Heights at Thursdays district semifinal match at North Muskegon. The Wildcats rolled in three games, 25-5, 25-1, 25-7.

Montague fell just a few points shy of a shutout in the second game, as Heights did not manage a point until Montague had scored 20.

Montague rallies to beat Norse in pre-district

MUSKEGON Facing a two-game deficit and a home crowd backing North Muskegon, the Montague Wildcats decided they didnt want to end their season just yet.

So the Wildcats rallied, routing the Norse in games three and four before edging them in the decisive fifth game to move on to Thursdays district semifinal against Muskegon Heights.

The matchs final score was 20-25, 22-25, 25-11, 25-18, 15-12.

Vikings sharp in district semis

SPRING LAKE Following the District 52 semifinal match against Orchard View, Whitehall Coach Ted Edsall said the goals for his state-ranked Vikings were to stay sharp and be safe.

Mission accomplished.

Whitehall, ranked fourth in Class B with a 40-11-2 record, dominated the Cardinals in a three-game sweep.

The Vikings jumped out to early 11-1, 11-2 and 8-2 leads in winning the games, 25-9, 25-7 and 25-11. Even in the third game when Edsall substituted his lineup freely, Whitehall didnt skip a beat.

Also playing well Thursday was freshman setter, Alyssa Myers, who had 20 assists in the abbreviated night, and junior libero Jenna Pesch who had 11 digs.

Rockets bounced by Grand Haven

GRAND HAVEN The Reeths-Puffer Rockets faced a tall task Monday evening, trying to defeat a top-notch Grand Haven team in pre-district play. The Buccaneers came in armed with Abby Cole, a Miss Volleyball finalist in the state.

Whitehall wins WMC tournament, Montague 6th

SHELBY The Whitehall Vikings concluded a long day of volleyball Saturday afternoon the same way they seem to conclude every year at the West Michigan Conference tournament: as league champions.

Whitehall rolled through the tournament without losing a game, sweeping Oakridge, Montague and Mason County Central to claim the tournament and conference title. Its the fourth year in a row that the Vikings have taken the league championship.
