Whitehall boys win 1st-ever GMAA title

MUSKEGON — For the first time ever, Whitehall’s boys cross-country team captured the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association championship at the city meet last Saturday.

The Vikings scored 43 points, easily topping Mona Shores’ score of 63 to capture the title.

Alex Dennis led a deep Vikings’ team effort by placing fourth individually, posting a time of 16:44. The Vikings had four other finishers place in the top 15 to propel the team to victory. Logan Irey was sixth for the Vikings and Keaton Smith placed seventh.

Brayden Berson barely missed a medal, coming in 11th place. Mitch Boyce rounded out the Vikes’ scorers with a 15th-place finish.

Montague placed eighth of 10 finishing teams in the boys’ race, with its top three boys’ finishers running personal bests. Dylan Graber ran what coach Terry Fick called “a breakout time” of 17:49 and placed 18th to lead the Wildcats. Spencer Morse was 22nd, Carson Williams was 29th and Brennan Zuniga placed 42nd for Montague.

Reeths-Puffer’s boys placed 10th at the city meet. Nate Harris led all Rockets’ finishers with a time of 18:30, placing 36th. Jon Meier was 38th for the Rockets.

R-P girls 2nd, Whitehall 4th, Montague 8th at city meet

MUSKEGON — At the GMAA girls’ cross-country race, Reeths-Puffer posted a top-notch showing, finishing second to Mona Shores’ score of 39 with a total of 54.

The Rockets had two top-10 finishers, with sophomore Micah Peel’s third-place finish leading the way. She posted a time of 19:39.4. Summer Hussey came in 10th for the Rockets. McKenzie Richardson was 12th, Emily Cross 14th and Shyanna Archer was 15th.

Whitehall placed fourth in the girls’ meet, with Jessica Harris’s eighth-place finish in a time of 20:12.4 pacing the Vikings’ effort. Kallan Sawyer came in 21st, while Courtney Schilbe was 22nd and Cassandra McAllister placed 25th.

Montague came in eighth place at the girls’ meet. Kenadee Shugars led the way for Montague, taking 18th place with a time of 21:04. Jane Dandron placed 46th and ran a personal best, while Morgan Shugars came in 50th.

Whitehall boys 2nd at WMC Jamboree

WHITEHALL — Whitehall’s boys cross-country team performed well Tuesday at its home jamboree, the final jamboree in the West Michigan Conference this season.

Whitehall’s score of 49 was far better than third-place Hart and came within 13 of perennial power Mason County Central.

The Vikings earned their score with a deep run of finishers, as Whitehall had six of the eight finishers between seventh and 14th place. Logan Irey was the Vikes’ top finisher at seventh place, with a time of 17:41. Alex Dennis and Keaton Smith came in eighth and ninth respectively. Whitehall also posted finishers 12 through 14, with Brayden Berson, Reiley Brown and Tyler Grove filling the respective spots.

Montague’s boys took sixth at the WMC meet, with Dylan Graber’s time of 18:50 taking 22nd place to lead the Wildcats. Carson Williams came in 29th, while Spencer Morse was 30th.

Whitehall’s girls placed fourth at the WMC meet, with Jessica Harris pacing the Vikings with a second-place finish. Her time was 20:35.

Kenadee Shugars led Montague, who didn’t post a team score, by placing 10th. Her time was 21:36.

R-P competes at O-K Black finals

GRAND RAPIDS — The Reeths-Puffer Rockets concluded their regular season Wednesday afternoon, running in the O-K Black Conference finals hosted by Kenowa Hills.

Reeths-Puffer’s boys placed sixth of the six teams at the meet. Nate Harris led the Rockets, placing 24th with a time of 19:17.9. Chris Colbert placed 30th for Reeths-Puffer.

The Rocket girls placed fourth at the meet. Micah Peel again paced the Rockets by placing fifth. Her time was 20:08.5.

Summer Hussey was 17th, while Emily Cross came in 18th and Shyanna Archer was 21st for the Rockets.
