The restoration of the turn of the 20th century apothecary shop in Whitehall got a financial boost from a community event.
HarborLight Credit Union and The White Lake Beacon, cosponsors of the Maritime Festival Community Picnic, donated $789.07, to the Meinhardi Building restoration by the We Can Do It Company, a non-profit group. The donated funds came from the sales of hot dog dinners at the picnic. Each year the picnic cosponsors donate the proceeds to a local non-profit organization.
Helen Fink of the We Can Do It Company, said “we are so grateful for this contribution.”
Leslie Salter of the HarborLight Credit Union said the selection of the Meinhardi restoration project was a result of “right timing.”
The Meinhardi Building, languishing in a backyard of a home on Mears Ave, was donated for use as a museum. The building was moved to its current location next to the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the Caboose Museum, 124 E. Hanson St., Whitehall.
A new roof has been installed and the exterior siding has been restored and painted.
Fink said a local contractor inspected the interior to determine what work is needed before the building can be opened to the public. Fink envisions the Meinhardi Building as a museum, displaying period apothecary and medical artifacts.
Fink said the building needs removal of shelving and cupboards and winterization, electrical wiring and fixtures, insulation, interior wall surface, painting, finished carpentry, floor refinishing and heating.
The Meinhardi building restoration wasn’t the only benefactor of the community picnic. Hot dog buns left over from the picnic were donated to the White Lake Area Food Pantry at Lebanon Lutheran Church for distribution to needy families in the community.
