SCOTTVILLE — Whitehall’s cross-country teams posted a strong showing Tuesday at the second West Michigan Conference jamboree of the season at Mason County Central.

The Vikings’ boys placed second, with Logan Irey leading the way with a sixth-place individual finish. Irey’s time of 17:05 led all area finishers. The Vikings posted solid results across the board, as Alex Dennis was ninth and Brayden Berson was 11th. Mitch Boyce (12th), Roger Champion (13th) and

Reiley Brown (16th) also notched top-20 finishes for Whitehall.

On the girls’ side, the Vikings came in third, led by Jessica Harris’s third-place finish. Harris ran her race in 19:55, breaking 20 minutes for the first time.

“She is having a great season and continues to mature in her racing ability,” Whitehall coach Kathy Hector said.

Jessica Friend was the second Viking across the line, placing 13th. Ashley Mills (14th), Courtney Schilbe (16th) and Kallan Sawyer (17th) were also top-20 finishers for Whitehall.

Montague’s boys placed seventh at the Mason County Central jamboree, with Spencer Morse leading the way with a 19th-place finish. Morse’s time was 18:22. Dylan Graber placed 30th with a time of 19:01.

“Carson Williams had a great race going into the second mile when a hornet flew in his mouth and stung him in his throat,” Montague coach Terry Fick said. “After all that he was still able to finish 55th.”

The girls could not post a team score for Montague, with only three finishers, but Kenadee Shugars continued her rapid rise up the standings by placing seventh with a time of 20:24. Fick said Shugars’s time was the fifth-best time in Montague girls’ cross-country history. Jane Dandron and Kaitlin Adams also finished for the Wildcats.
