MONTAGUE — It was an old-fashioned slugfest between old-fashioned rivals Whitehall and Montague Friday night, and true to the game’s form, it was defense that won the game — and the rivalry trophy, the Red, White and Blue Bell — for the Montague Wildcats.

The Whitehall Vikings began to chip away at Montague defensively throughout the fourth quarter and finally had a chance on fourth and three in the Wildcats’ red zone with 2:23 left to set themselves up for one of the rivalry’s greatest finishes.

However, Whitehall got two yards when it needed three and the Wildcats held on for a hard-fought 9-3 victory in their first home game.

R-P falls to Big Reds

Johndries Betts-Render ran for three touchdowns and 113 yards for Reeths-Puffer Friday night, but it was not enough against unbeaten and state-ranked Muskegon.

The visiting Big Reds (5-0) carved up the Rocket defense in the 56-18 O-K Black victory. It was the eighth straight time the vaunted Big Reds have defeated Reeths-Puffer since the Rockets defeated Muskegon 19-14 in 1999.
