Blue Lake Township’s millage proposal for a new fire station was soundly defeated while voters passed one of two bond proposals for upgrades to Reeths-Puffer School facilities in Tuesday’s general election.
Results reported by the Muskegon County Clerk’s office are unofficial at this time.
In Blue Lake Township, 82 percent of the voters opposed a 1.54 mill proposal for the construction of a fire station on White Lake Drive, replacing the current pole barn facility. The proposal received 223 no votes to just 48 yes votes.
In the Reeths-Puffer school district, 58 percent of electors passed a $23.6 million bond proposal to upgrade technology, building security, building mechanical systems, and flooring, furniture, classroom modifications and new roofs on some buildings.
A second proposal calling for the installation of synthetic turf on the high school football and soccer fields was defeated with 57 percent of the voters casting no votes.
In elections for city council seats, the City of Montague will have a new council member, while the City of Whitehall is returning all of its incumbents.
Montague
Voters returned Mayor Henry Roesler, Jr. to his 10th, two-year term. He received 191 votes to 85 for challenger Kevin L. Erb.
Mark Freeland will join the city council. He was the top vote getter with 192. Incumbents Dennis Lydens (189) and Calvin “Hap” Cederquist (185) were returned by voters. Incumbent Darric Roesler (178() was unseated.
Whitehall
Incumbents Tanya Cabala (177), Jeffrey D. Holmstrom (170), Stephen H. Sikkenga (164) were returned to four-year terms. Incumbent James H. Bartholomew (147) is back with a two-year term. Eighteen-year-old challenger Jordan H. Conrad (119) failed to gain a seat.
